All the movie stuff not fit to pitch.
Hi! I’m a freelance culture writer. Maybe you’ve read stuff I wrote at the A.V. Club (I love the Star Wars prequels! I don’t really like Trading Places! I have other, less objectionable opinions!) or Polygon (I love the Star Wars toys! I also love Sofia Coppola!), or Nylon (if so, you must not be the current editor!), or other places. Maybe you’ve heard my melodious voice gracing The New Flesh Podcast for over a year now (!) or enjoyed my co-labor of co-love, SportsAlcohol.com, where I also podcast and write stuff. If you’re really into the deep cuts, maybe you’ve read the occasional short story I’ve written?! Unlikely, but possible!
I also do other things because freelance writing does not, how you say, pay the bills. Even if one, how you say, has the skills.
Anyway, I caved and decided to start a Substack on a combination joke, whim, and answer to a long-standing debate with myself over whether I should start a Substack. Oh, also something about cancel culture? Just kidding! As much as I enjoy the conferred prestige of getting essays and reviews and stuff up at reputable publications, I must admit that it does not always happen that way. I have great editors all over the place, but it just doesn’t always work out. There are budgets. There are schedules.
There are, I have heard, other writers. I know. Rude. I like the idea of occasionally writing for an audience, but not having to ask permission, and also not just putting it on Twitter. So, a Substack. The aim is for this to become a regular thing, and eventually maybe go like, half-free, half-paid content, for anyone who’s, well, into the deep cuts.
This will probably not be where I put regular new-release movie reviews because those can go on Rotten Tomatoes if I put them on SportsAlcohol.com, and also, SportsAlcohol.com is my beautiful baby and I would never neglect it!!! This will probably not be where I put anything that I can get placed at an outlet that will pay me good money. But sometimes everyone who turns down a pitch is wrong! So, some of those pitches will wind up here, as might some other long-term projects that would just clog up the SportsAlcohol.com mainframe.
Anyway, if you enjoy my writing, and appreciate my promise to never post anything without sentence case, please, jump on board.
In the meantime, tell your friends!
